Los octavos de final en ambas llaves resultaron en una programación más manejable con solamente 8 partidos de sencillos en cada llave.  En el lado varonil siguen 12 de 16 jugadores sembrados con solamente las siembras 5, 7, 15, y 16 eliminados. Los 5 y 7 fueron desplazados por Leo BORG de suecia y JC RODDICK de USA en la segunda vuelta y ambos jugadores traen al torneo un distinguido árbol genealógico tenístico. En tercera vuelta BORG domino a Juncheng SHANG (CHN) 6-2, 6-3 pero RODDICK tuvo más dificultad con Jackson ANTHROP de USA prevaleciendo por 3-6, 7-6, 7-5.

¿Tendremos una final de ensueño de BORG/RODDICK? Suave, suave dicen los sembrados 1 y 2 Dali BLANCH de USA y Natan RODRIGUEZ de Brasil. BLANCH continúa su búsqueda a la final (logrado por su hermano Ulises hace 4 años) y finalmente perdió un set contra Axel GARCIAN de francia por 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 pero sigue intimidante con sus golpes duros. Natan RODRIGUEZ doblegó a Jin GU de la china 6-2, 6-4, así manteniendo su posición en la segunda mitad de la llave. Otros talentosos jugadores también siguen disputando el camino a la final. Estos incluyen a BOSCARDIN (10) de brasil, KUZUHARA de USA, DE ALBA VALDES (4) de méxico, y SADAOUI (11) de francia.

La llave femenil continúa con su gran apertura en cuanto las siembras mayores siguen cayendo. La  no. 1 Julia GARCIA de méxico cayó ante Alexis BLOKHINA de USA 7-6, 6-2 así como la otra mexicana Alejandra CRUZ sembrada 5 ante Rebecca LYNN de USA (11) por marcador 7-5, 6-2. Solamente las siembras 8, 11, 15, y 16 permanecen en la llave lo que significa que un puesto en la final es posible para cualquiera de las jugadoras que quedan.

Las no sembradas Melisa ERCAN de turquía y Alexia HARMON de USA continúan ganando en la mitad de la llave. HARMON es una jugadora que llama la atención en cuanto sigue ganando con facilidad, habiendo despachado a la sembrada 6 VAN IMPE de bégica por 6-0, 6-1 en la segunda vuelta. Sofia ROJAS y Nevena CARTON, ambas de USA también han ganado con facilidad. Otra jugadora notable es la serbia Lola RADIVOJEVIC (15) quien eliminó a la dificil Tanisha KASYAP de la india en 3 sets. KASHYAP había derrotado a la no. 2 Tara MALIK de USA por 6-0, 6-4 en la segunda vuelta. Sí, esta llave se la lleva cualquiera de las jugadoras.

En semifinal varonil el sembrado 1 Shintaro MOCHIZUKI de Japón derrotó a Blu BAKER de Inglaterra en un reñido partido a 3 sets, con marcador 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Esto fue la primera vez que MOCHIZUKI perdió un set durante el torneo. BAKER jugó con fortaleza y tuvo un buen torneo pero las tácticas del japonés de entrar a net y jugar todo terreno cansaron al británico sembrado 4.

En la otra semifinal varonil el jugador de gran saque y golpes duros Martin DAMM de USA, hijo de un jugador ATP checo del mismo nombre, despachó a Alex MARTINEZ de España, ganando por marcador 6-4, 6-4. MARTINEZ tiene familia en Costa Rica y era el favorito de los aficionados pero no pudo mantenerse ante la fuerza de DAMM aunque el español es 2 años mayor. En segunda vuelta DAMM desalojó al sembrado 2 MALAN de Sur Africa para tomar el lugar del último puesto en la llave y ahora se encuentra en la final con el japonés que ocupa el primer lugar de la llave.

Ambos jugadores nacieron en el 2003. El lector debe juzgar por sí mismo cuál de los 2 ha logrado mayor desempeño para llegar a esta final, y cuál debe ser el favorito. MOCHIZUKI es extremadamente agil, sube a net con frecuencia, tiene un gran tiro de smash y además una gran devolución de servicio. DAMM dispone de un muy fuerte saque y pega duro en sus golpes de gran precisión, así gastando a los competidores.

En la semifinal femenil la no sembrada canadiense Melodie COLLARD continuó siendo la revelación del torneo, sobreviviendo y domando a la muy capaz jugadora sembrada 14 Charlotte OWENSBY de USA en un difícil encuentro a 3 sets, con marcador 6-1, 6-7, 7-5. Melodie ha deleitado a la afición con su estilo poco usual de todo terreno, incursionando a net con frecuencia, voleando, y defendiendo globos con su fuerte smash. Fue un partido emocionante hasta el final donde OWENSBY se defendió hasta el último 7-5.

El otro partido de semifinal de damas fue acreditado a la no sembrada Abigail FORBES de USA ranqueada 418 quien le ganó a su compañera de práctica Gabriella PRICE (USA), ranqueada 38 y sembrada 2. PRICE parece tener los golpes más clásicos y vistosos y voló durante el torneo sin perder un set hasta la SF. Sin embargo FORBES, una jugadora muy capaz quien jugará para la universidad UCLA en setiembre, quizás tenía una leve ventaja en mayor volumen de cuerpo y 2 años más de experiencia, nacida en 2001 vs 2003 para PRICE.

COLLARD juega todo terreno y es más atrevida en sus tácticas pero FORBES es jugadora fuerte y resistente que quizás podrá manejar mejor la presión del momento y defenderse. Ambas jugadoras no están sembradas y se ubican en los 400´s del ranking mundial ITF. (COLLARD = 441, FORBES = 418). Juzgue por sí mismo cuál de las 2 jugadoras ha tenido mayores logros para llegar a esta final, y cuál será la favorita.

La Llave de Calificación para la Copa del Café no. 55 comenzó sábado 12 de enero bajo un cielo celeste y un tiempo perfecto de tenis. En total, se disputaron 24 partidos, 16 varonil y 8 femenil.

En la llave varonil los resultados en general se ajustaron a lo anticipado en cuanto 14 de 16 sembrados progresaron a la segunda vuelta, con sorpresas sobre los sembrados 12 y 14 por Jameson CORSILLO (USA) y Francisco ARCE VIEYRA (MEX) respectivamente. La Llave femenil incluyó solamente 8 siembras y todas pasaron a la segunda vuelta por modalidad de Bye. Los 8 partidos jugados fueron disputados entre jugadoras sin ranking, principalmente jugadoras locales deseando entrar a la Llave Principal.

La acción tenística de mañana definirá los últimos puestos de las Llaves Principales, llegando así al límite de 64 jugadores. Partidos de las Llaves Principales comenzarán temprano el lunes 14 de enero.

La conferencia de prensa para la Copa no. 55 se llevó a cabo ayer martes 8 de enero 2019, revelando la lista de jugadores inscritos para la Copa 2019. Las siembras no. 1 son Shintaro MOCHIZUKI de japón (no. 82 mundial) y Alexandra NOEL de USA (ranqueada no. 15).

Ambas llaves indican un alto nivel de talento tenístico con 5 top 100 jugadores por el lado varonil de 5 diferentes países, y 19 top 200. La lista femenil incluye 7 top 100 de 5 países, y 21 jugadoras dentro de las primeras 200.

El corte varonil a la posición 46 ha sido 343, y del lado femenil 460, así reflejando un elenco fuerte de jugadores. De los primeros 46 jugadores en ambas Llaves Principales, 19 varones (41%) y 17 damas (37%) regresan de la Copa del Café 2018.

La lista varonil ahora incluye 111 nombres desde una inscripción total de 211, y del lado femenil actualmente se incluyen 82 jugadoras desde una inscripción total de 187 jugadoras que se disputan los 64 puestos de cada Llave Principal. Esto significa que el Qualy varonil probablemente incluirá un complemento completo de 32 jugadores, mientras que habrán varios “byes” en el Qualy femenil donde toda jugadora en la lista tendrá oportunidad de jugar por lo menos el Qualy.

La Copa no. 55 entonces dará comienzo oficial el sábado 12 de enero 2019 con las Llaves de Calificación, a ser completada el domingo para así definir los últimos 8 puestos de la Llave Principal que comienza temprano el lunes 14 de enero.  Los invitamos a unirse a la acción tenistica.

Tennis fans were treated Friday to 4 stellar boys and girls semifinal matches on the hard courts of the  Costa Rica Country Club.  Play commenced at 11:30 am with the 2 girls singles semifinals, followed by the 4 doubles matches, and closing with the boys singles semifinals in night play.  

In the morning girls matches with all players from USA, 7^th seed Shannon LAM ranked 112 upset top seed Kaitlyn ROLLS ranked 63 by a comfortable 6-4,6-1. ROLLS had not dropped a set in the tournament but for this match LAM was the better player. LAM`s WTN rating of 13.1 vs. 14.8 for ROLLS was indicative of the final result, despite the rankings.  In the other girls semifinal of 2 unseeded and evenly matched players, 137^TH ranked Kristina PENICKOVA eliminated Thea FRODIN ranked 123 by 6-4, 6-4. Both are solid, crafty players with strong groundstrokes, and today PENICKOVA prevailed.

In the boys SF Ian MAYEW continued with his winning ways, eliminating unseeded Maximus DASSAULT of USA ranked 123 in straight sets. MAYEW ranked 269 has come from the Qualy all the way to the final and evidently his ranking is not indicative of his level of play. His WTN rating of 11.4 vs. DASSAULT`s 13.8 foretold the results of the match. The other boys semifinal featured unseeded Matisse FARZAM of USA ranked 106 vs. 2^nd seed Rafael TOBON of Colombia ranked 69, and the only seeded player in the boys draw as of the quarterfinals. Both are strong players yet FARZAM was able to dominate the South American in straight sets. It is now an all USA affair in both boys and girls singles draws. 

Saturday Finals are to begin at 4pm on Stadium Court starting with Girls Singles, followed by Girls Doubles. Shannon LAM is in both finals, so singles go first. In the doubles, LAM partners with Thea FRODIN as they square off against the Slovakian duo of Ema MRAVCOVA and Mia POHANKOVA.  In night play the Canadian doubles team of brothers Mikael and Nicolas ARSENAULT will do battle with the American team of Noah JOHNSTON and Benjamin WILLWERTH. The final match of the tournament will be the boys final of MAYEW – FARZAM.

Quarterfinal day at the 2024 Copa del Café featured 8 singles and 4 doubles matches starting at 11am.  By the end of the night only 4 boys and 4 girls were alive in singles and the 2 doubles draws had defined semifinalists as well.

In the boys draw Ian MAYEW continued his assault on the draw. Ranked only 269 and in from the Qualy, the talented American eliminated 105 ranked Kase SCHINNERER in straight sets. Despite the rankings, MAYEW`s WTN rating of 11.4 is stronger than SCHINNERER`s 12.2, so perhaps this was not such an upset after all. In the other match in the top half of the draw Maximus DASSAULT of USA ranked 123 dispatched fellow American Dominick MOSEJCZUK ranked 234 and a wild card by a score of 6-3, 6-2.  WTN ratings for the semifinal matchup are MAYEW 11.4, DASSAULT 13.8.

In the bottom half of the draw 106 ranked Matisse FARZAM of USA eliminated the popular Qualifier Yubel UBRI ranked 193. UBRI, an American of Dominican descent, delighted the fans the night before by upsetting Guatemalan Rafael BOTRAN, but Thursday night he just appeared to run out of gas as the lopsided score of 6-0, 6-2 would indicate. Rounding out the draw at the bottom, second seed Miguel TOBON of Colombia ranked 69 bested the talented 116th ranked Russian Dmitri BESSONOV  in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. WTN ratings for this semifinal are FARZAM 11.5, TOBON 12.2.

In the top half of the Girls Draw no. 1 seed Kaitlyn ROLLS ranked 63 easily defeated her skilled opponent Jeline VANDROMME of Belgium in straight sets 6-4, 6-0. Kaitlyn has “rolled” over her opponents, not dropping a set during the tournament, and easily put away VANDROMME who had the best WTN rating in the draw of 12.1. The WTN rating for ROLLS is inferior at 14.8; go figure. The other semifinal spot in the top half of the draw was taken by American 7^th seed Shannon LAM ranked 112. LAM won in 3 sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 over 88 ranked  Margot PHANTALA of France, winning 12 of the last 14 games. LAM`s WTN rating is 13.1, better tan ROLLS.   

In the bottom half of the draw unseeded and 137^th ranked Kristina PENICKOVA of USA eliminated 3^rd seed Monika EKSTRAND ranked 85 in straight sets  6-0, 7-6. Kristina is a skilled player with WTN of 13.1, the best of the remaining players along with LAM. The last semifinal berth has been taken by another unseeded player, Thea FRODIN of USA ranked 123. Thea defeated the difficult Naomi XU of Canada who frustrates players with slow balls that kick high, making returning with pace difficult. Thea is a strong player and was able to subdue the Canadian in 3 sets, 6-0, 2-6, 6-4. PENICKOVA and FRODIN as unseeded players have drawn little attention so far, but both are strong and capable. The WTN matchup here is PENICKOVA 13.1 vs. FRODIN 14.7.    

To the semifinals!

Second round play in singles was completed on Wednesday, and in the Boys Draw surprises continued. Two of the three matches highlighted yesterday resulted in major upsets. The first was Ian MAYEW from the Qualy and ranked 269 defeating top seed Nikita FILIN ranked 58 by 6-1, 7-6, although the WTN rating of the players at 11.4 for MAYEW and 10.5 for FILIN suggested a tight match. Kase SCHINNERER eliminated Jack SECORD in a tough 3 sets 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 where both players had practically identical WTN ratings (12.2 and 12.4). The second upset was wild card Dominick MOSEJCZUK of USA ranked 234 taking out third seed Rafael SEGADO of Spain rankled 77 in straight sets 7-5, 6-1. Rounding out the top half of the draw MAXIMUS DASSAULT ranked 123 dispatched Boxiong ZHANG of China by a surprisingly easy 6-2,6-2. The top half of the draw is now an all USA affair and wide open as all seeds have been eliminated, although MAYEW has the best WTN rating of 11.4.

In the bottom half of the draw Qualifier Yubel UBRI of USA but with Dominican roots beat the talented Rafael BOTRAN of Guatemala in straight sets in night play, to the delight of the fans. Like the Gladiator, Yubel “won the crowd” with his enthusiasm and delightful demeanor. In the remaining matches Matisse FARZAM of USA won in straight sets, as did Russian Dmitry BESSONOV over Qualifier Fredrik SOLHEIM of Norway. Rounding out the bottom half of the draw, no. 2 seed Miguel TOBON of Colombia ranked 69 beat Jordan REZNIK of USA ranked 140 by 6-3, 6-4. TOBON with WTN rating of 12.2 is now the only seed left and the man to beat in a wide open Boys Draw.   

In the Girls Draw second round play has resulted in all seeded players occupying the 4 slots in the top half: Kaitlyn ROLLS of USA ranked 63 as seed 1, Jeline VANDROMME of Belgium ranked 105 as seed 5, Margot PHANTALA of France ranked 88 as seed 4, and Shannon LAM of USA ranked 112 and seeded 7. The first 3 girls won their second round matches in straight sets while LAM needed 3 sets to turn back her opponent Krisha MAHENDRAN of India. Despite the rankings, VANDROMME and LAM have the best WTN ratings in the draw at 12.1 and 13.1 respectively.

In the bottom half of the draw only 1 seed remains: Monika EKSTRAND of USA who dispatched her Spanish opponent Meritxell TEIXIDO easily 6-0, 6-2. Unseeded Kristina PENICKOVA ranked 137 (WTN of 13.1) and Thea FRODIN ranked 123, both from USA, won their second round matches in 3 sets over tough opponents, who were wild card Kayla CHUNG of USA and the tough Viola Bedini of Italy respectively. The last spot in the draw was taken by Naomi XU of Canada by ousting Mexican Natalia FANTINI who had taken out no. 2 seed Claire AN in the first round. Naomi was a Copa 57 finalist and is a tough draw as she hits a high bouncing ball that is difficult to return with pace. Quarterfinals, here we are.

On Tuesday Day 2 of the Copa del Café, the last 11 first round singles matches, and all 16 first round doubles matches were completed. This means that players start to exit the tournament as they are eliminated from both singles and doubles. Wednesday`s program includes 16 second round singles matches (8 each for boys and girls), and 8 second round doubles.

In the boys draw the number 7 seed Goncalo MARQUES of Portugal was ousted by Jack SECORD of USA by 6-3,6-2 so that only the numbers 1 (FILIN of USA), 2 (TOBON of Colombia), and 3 (SEGADO of Spain) seeds remain in the draw. All 3 seeds will be tested in the second round as their 3 opponents, all from USA, have among the best WTN ratings in the field: FILIN at 10.5 vs. MAYEW at 11.4, TOBON at 12.2 vs. REZNIK at 12.1, and SEGADO  at 11.9 vs. MOSEJCZUK at 12.0. We can thus expect tough matches ahead in the second round as play heats up.

Seven girls singles matches were played today to complete first round play and American top seed Kaitlyn “ROLLS” over her opponent Addison COMISKEY (USA) in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. Seventh seed Shannon LAM of USA also won easily by 6-1,6-3 over Neus TORNER SENSANO of Spain so that seeds 1, 3, 4, 5, and 7 remain. The top pairing for the second round appears to be wild card Kayla CHUNG of USA ranked 194 and with WTN of 13.2 vs. 137 ranked Kristina PENICKOVA of USA with WTN of 13.1. Other girls to watch with strong WTN ratings are no. 5 seed Jeline VANDROMME of Belgium at 12.1 (best in the draw), no. 3 seed Monika EKSTRAND of USA at 12.8, and no. 7 seed Shannon LAM of USA at 13.1. These are the best 5 WTN ratings in the draw.    

The second round certainly looks to be entertaining.

There were 21 Monday singles matches at the 59^th Copa del Café between the 2 draws: 12 boys and 9 girls. There were a surprising number of upsets as seeds tumbled and lesser ranked players prevailed in several occasions, especially in the Boys Draw.

Boys seeds numbers 1 (FILIN of USA) and 2 (TOBON of Colombia) cruised through to the second round, but seeds 4, 5, 6, and 8 went down (seeds 3 and 7 play Tuesday) and there were other upsets as well. Seven of the boys 12 matches could be considered as upsets. The most notable of these were Qualifier and no. 193 Yubel UBRI of USA defeating in 3 sets Spain`s Bernardo MUNK MESA seeded 6 and ranked 89, Qualifier Meecah BIGUN of USA ranked 162 dispatching rather easily Salvadorean Cesar CRUZ  seeded 4 and ranked 82, and Fredrik SOLHEIM of Norway ranked 359 eliminating 8<sup>th</sup> seed Stiles BROCKETT of USA ranked 94 in 3 sets. By the way, BIGUN`s twin brother is ranked 9^th in the world.  

The Girls Draw had more normal results with seeds 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8 progressing to the second round. But 2^nd seed Claire AN of  USA ranked 80 was surprised by no. 238 Natalia FANTINI of Mexico in 3 sets. Top seed Kaitlin ROLLS and 7^th seed Shannon LAM (both from USA) play Tuesday. There were 2 memorable girls matches played Monday where both players fought well and both deserved to win. One of these was the pairing of 5^th seed Jeline VANDROMME of Belgium ranked 105 vs. Mia POHANKOVA of Slovakia ranked 117 where the Belgian prevailed in 3 sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Both girls had solid WTN ratings of 12.1 and 13.1 respectively, among the best in the field. The other top matchup was between 4^th seed Margot PHANTALA of France ranked 88 and wild card Brooke BLACK of Great Britain ranked 256. The French girl prevailed but it was not easy as the 7-6(8), 7-5 score indicates.

The 11 remaining first round singles matches will finish today Tuesday, followed by the first round of the 2 doubles draws of 16 teams each.
